What is Sticky Chai and How Do You Brew It?

If you’ve spotted sticky chai on a café menu or heard friends raving about it, you might be wondering what makes it different from regular chai — and how you can brew it at home. Let us share our story.
What is Sticky Chai?
Sticky chai is a modern take on masala chai, the spiced tea traditionally brewed on the streets and in the homes of India. Instead of being a dry mix, sticky chai combines whole leaf black tea with freshly ground spices, then binds them together with honey for a naturally sweet and aromatic blend.
At The Organic Tea Project, we make our Sticky Chai the way we remember drinking it as kids in India:
-
Broken Orange Pekoe Assam tea — strong, malty, and the backbone of real chai.
-
Wild honey — blended in after we gently roast the spices to release their natural oils.
-
A rich spice mix — cardamom, cinnamon, ginger root, cloves, star anise, and black peppercorns.
Many blends are simply spice-heavy, but ours is designed to capture the strength and balance of the chai Alok and Jonas drank every day at 10am and 3pm — a ritual that inspired us to recreate it when we started the brand.
How to Brew Sticky Chai at Home
There are a couple of ways to make sticky chai, but here’s the method you’ll find on our packet — simple, authentic, and delicious:
-
Scoop – Add 2 heaped teaspoons of Sticky Chai into your jug or small saucepan.
-
Bloom – Pour in ¼ cup hot water and let it brew for 4 minutes.
-
Add milk – Top with your milk of choice and gently heat (or steam if you have a café-style setup).
-
Strain – Pour through a strainer into your glass or mug.
-
Finish – Sprinkle over our Magic Chai Dust (a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and sugar) for extra flavour.
Why Sticky Chai?
-
Richer flavour – Roasting the spices and blending with wild honey preserves the essential oils and aromas.
-
Authentic roots – Our blend is designed to be as close as possible to the chai we grew up with in India.
-
Versatile ritual – Brew it hot for comfort or pour over ice for a refreshing summer chai.
Sticky Chai isn’t just a spiced tea — it’s a ritual. It slows you down, fills your kitchen with the scent of roasted spices, and delivers a cup that feels both indulgent and restorative.
